Founded in 1911 by William C. Durant and
Swiss racecar driver Louis Chevrolet, the
company’s first luxury car rental was
a five-passenger touring sedan with an engine
that topped out at 65mph, which was pretty
impressive at the time for such a large car.
Competing with other top car manufacturers,
like Ford, the company was forced to produce
cars that were stronger in both style and
performance and soon outsold all the rest.
A true Chevrolet car rental, the popular
Corvette was introduced in 1953 and was the
first ever production car with a fiberglass
body. The company expanded in the 1960’s
when they sold the first domestic production
car that featured an all-round independent
suspension. When Ford introduced the Mustang,
Chevrolet introduced with a similar exotic
car rental, the Camaro, which has become one
of the most recognized American cars in history.
During the 1970’s the company was forced
to begin manufacturing smaller cars as a result
of gas shortages and the demand for a sportier
ride. After downsizing large popular models,
such as the Caprice and Malibu, the company
came up with the Vega and the Chevette, which
were able to compete with foreign models and
the luxury sports cars of that time.
